I remember cooking my very first Thanksgiving as a newlywed of an enlisted Navy sailor. We were alone, so we did an Orphan Sailor Thanksgiving.

That's where married sailors in the unit invite seamen that are stuck on base, single, and would otherwise just be dinning in the mess hall for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

We were on a pauper's pay, poor with only one 'o', but I found a 28 lb turkey at the commissary. I forgot though that our studio apartment only had a 3/4 size oven!

I had to use bungee cords to keep the oven door closed during the roasting! Part of the skin actually baked on the window of the oven door. The turkey still tasted amazing though!
